Biography:
Island Futurism is Taiwan's first Afrobeat inspired band formed in 2018, led by DJ @llenblow, former bassist of Dub/Reggae bands Hang In The Air & Taimaica Soundsystem, and one of the purposes is to pay tribute to Fela Kuti, Father of Afrobeat. Their music infuses Funk, Psychedelic, Jazz into traditional and islandish music to create their unique sounds of the future, emphasis grooves and improvisations. Their ideology inherits Afrofuturism mainly, trying to provide a beautiful vision of the future, but transforming it into Austronesian edition by adding themes of Taiwan's aboriginal mythologies and alien legends, to coin Formobeat that only belongs to Taiwan.

In July of 2020, they made their 13-piece one-take recording session at The Cave in Taichung in 2 days, and then independently released their debut album AIslanders digital version in the end of 2020, also marked the very first Afrobeat album in Taiwan. In April of 2021, cassette version was out in limited quantity of 200, and they achieved release parties with Taiwan's first 2 sound systems in Taipei and Kaohsiung. AIslanders has received positive reviews from Taiwan and oversea since released, and was nominated for Best New Group/Band and Best Band of Singapore's online 14th Freshmusic Awards, also Best Jazz Album of Taiwan's 12th Golden Indie Music Awards.

島國未來主義是台灣第一個以源自70年代西非奈及利亞Afrobeat為主要靈感的大樂團，由前無政府、盪在空中以及台買加環繞音效bass手愛吹倫 a.k.a. DJ @llenblow號召之下所組成，成員最多達到18名，一大宗旨便是向Afrobeat之父Fela Kuti致敬。在音樂上結合了Funk、迷幻、Jazz等元素，強調的是律動與即興，亦同時在探索世界各地的島國原住民傳統音樂，並試圖溶入作品之中；在意識形態與美學上則承襲了「非洲未來主義」，再將其轉換為「南島語系」的版本，藉著導入台灣的原住民神話與外星人傳說等等，試圖打造出屬於台灣特有的Formobeat，更要對於島國的未來提出一個美好願景。

2020年7月在台中「洞穴」展開為期兩天的13人同步錄音計畫，並於年底獨立發行收錄6首作品的首張專輯《AIslanders (未來島民)》，同時也是台灣第一張Afrobeat專輯。實體卡帶版本接著在2021年4月發行，而結合台灣本土sound system的台北高雄發片專場亦為台灣獨立音樂圈的創舉。專輯推出之後得到來自國內外的正面評價，並獲得新加坡第十四屆線上音樂大獎Freshmusic Awards的「最佳新團體」與「最佳樂團」，以及台灣第十二屆「金音創作獎」的「最佳爵士專輯」等獎項提名殊榮。

At points, this reminds me of the bands that defined early chillwave, like Ducktails, Memory Tapes, or Predator Vision; the guitars are similarly reverb-y and chorus-drenched, chords splashing out lazily and slow, swaggers subverted into saunters. However, the Eastern melodic flavor gives this more of an overtly mystical aesthetic, and the instrumentation and compositional elements are far more exotic and interesting. Highly recommended.
